What Magnetic Particles/Powders Do
THEY ARE A SAFE, SURE, FAST, EASY, SENSITIVE LOW COST WAY TO FIND HIDDEN SURFACE AND SUB-SURFACE FLAWS IN METAL. 
Flaw Finder non-fluorescent dry magnetic particles/powders are used for dry method magnetic particle inspection. These are designed to be high contrast on most metal surfaces for use in visible light. Electric current is applied to the ferrous metal part for magnetization and the particles indicate small flaws and discontinuities.

The Benefits of Using Nondestructive Testing
Inspection penetrants are a nondestructive tool used to find defects which you might not otherwise notice. When a destructive test is performed, you are limited to the examination of a small percentage of parts (which are destroyed by the test). With non-destructive testing, you have the advantage of being able to examine, at a very low cost per part, 100% of the parts put into service.
Method:
Test in accordance with ASTM E1444. Sprinkle or spray the powder over the area or part that has been magnetized (a powder spray bulb can be used for this). Areas of flux leakage (cracks) contain both north and south magnetic poles. The iron powder is drawn to these poles, indicating the location and extent of the defect.
