Additives, alternate fluids or color change developers
can improve the speed and reliability of liquid leak testing. They can
also increase the sensitivity of the test results. The number in
parentheses after each product description indicates the paragraph in
the ASTM Standard E1003 with which that product complies. |
Water Detecting Powder (PiNPOiNT WDP-217):
This is
an aerosol color change developer, which, when sprayed on the points of
suspected leakage (joints, welds, connections), forms a white powder.
Through capillary action, it helps draw water through leaks, spreading
an indication to make it more visible and then it undergoes an
irreversible blue-green color change indicating the exact point of
seepage. The coating is non-toxic and can easily be removed with a damp
cloth. WDP-217 should be used only when the temperature of the surface
is higher than the dewpoint or the humidity is low enough to prevent
condensation from causing false indications. (ASTM 9.3.2.1 Visibility
Enhancer).

Fluorescent Water
Tracer Dyes (FT175):
These concentrated leak tracer dyes are biodegradable,non-toxic and immediately miscible in water.
FT175 tracers come in four fluorescent colors (yellow, green,
blue & orange, making multiple tests easy. Developed
for water systems study, these tracers are ideal for leak
testing large systems or pipelines. (ASTM 11.3.2.2 & ASTM 11.3.2.3 Visibility Enhancers).
Available in 8 oz and gallon packages.

Visible Red
Tracer Dye (RT-200):
This tracer is a
concentrated, immediately miscible liquid dye, operating in the
visible mode for water systems study, ideal for leak testing large systems or pipelines. Biodegradable.
RT-200 is diluted four ounces to 500 gallons. Available in 4oz and
gallon and bulk containers (ASTM 9.2.2.2
& 9.3.2.3 Visibility Enhancers).

Surface Tension Reducer
(Immersit ClM150 & CIM200):
This concentrate, when added to water, in the ratio of 5% to 25% greatly
decreases surface and interfacial tension causing a much greater volume
of water to flow through a leak. CIM-150 is biodegradable and inhibited
to prevent rust. CIM-150A has a much stronger rust inhibitor. CIM-200
has a wider temperature range. (ASTM 9.3.3 Lower Flow Resistance).

Water Soluble Tracer (FA-1A):
This
concentrated liquid tracer contain corrosion inhibitors, surface tension
reducers and water soluble powders which dry on the outside of a leak
developing the exact point of leakage long after the water evaporates.
FA-1A is yellow fluorescent which is easily visible without a black
light when dry. This concentrate should be diluted one part concentrate
to between 25 to 50 parts water. It is chelated to perform in hard
water. (ASTM 9.3.4).

F-trace and R-trace (Concentrate):
F-Trace (yellow) and R-Trace (red) were developed by Rockwell to
meet their need to test aircraft fuel tanks. They are an inexpensive,
non-corrosive and non-flammable way to test large tanks (lines and
pipes), including those which will contain hydrocarbons, such as
gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. Either can be used as a fluorescent tracer
with a 400nm UV light or can be used as a visible tracer. Dilute 1
gallon tracer to 99 gallons of de-ionized water. The tracers incorporate
surface/interfacial tension additives that allow them to find leaks as
small as 10-5 std cc/sec. The tracers are biodegradable and have a low
sulfur and halogen content, so they work well with high performance
metals such as stainless, nickel, aluminum and magnesium. (ASTM 9.3.4) |

HYDRO-1 and HYDRO-2
Color Change Detector for Cold Water Leaks
in a Humid Atmosphere: a 2-part system
Hydro-1 is a color change developer sprayed on the outside of a
potential leak site. Hydro-2 is a liquid tracer which goes into
solution with the test water. Hydro-2 causes a visible color
change from orange to purple when it comes in contact with the
Hydro-1 developer. Use for testing of large tanks, vessels,
complex piping systems, flexible containers and systems that
inherently contain or will contain water. It can also detect
leaks in valves, fittings and welds. It is formulated to prevent
false indications due to high moisture in the air or cold piping
that can condense water on its surface. Taking photographs of
the test results makes work easy to substantiate.

Fluorescent Penetrant (FL50):
This is a highly
fluorescent (MIL-I-25135 group VI +) water washable penetrant which can
be diluted with up to 30% water to provide a very sensitive, easily
removable, low cost hydro test fluid. (ASTM 9.3.3 & 9.3.4)

Ultrasonic Leak Detector (Sonic 3000):
This detector
can quickly and easily spot leaks as small as Ix10-2 std cc/sec. This is
a decade smaller than required by the ASTM standard. The Sonic 3000 can
be used either with pressurized air or with its sound generator as an
alternate to hydrostatic testing. It can be conveniently used as a quick
precheck before the more time consuming hydrostatic test is performed
(ASTM 10 Pretest).

Hydraulic/Fuel Systems |
Fluorescent Oil Additive (FAO-109):
This highly
fluorescent concentrate can be added to oil systems in the ratio of I
part to 50 parts. It is invisible in ordinary light but fluoresces
strong yellow with black light illumination. The Portable AGC Black
Light is Part # L102. The FAO-109 can be used to pinpoint leaks in
hydraulic lines, engine crankcases and shock absorbers. (It is
equivalent in sensitivity to ASTM 8.3.2C).

Dye Fuel Additive (RD-58):
Meets the requirements of
MIL-D-81298 and Air Force Technical Manual T.O. 42BI-1-10 (1970) for use
in detecting JP-4 fuel leaks. The 58 series dye will mix with all
hydrocarbons and many other fluids. It is particularly useful for
checking leaks near hot sections, where the high temperature prevents
the fuel from leaving a wet spot. When the dyed fuel evaporates, a
residue is left as an identifiable leak indication.

Oil Detecting Powder (ODP-210): ODP-210 forms an
opaque white powder coating when sprayed onto welds, joints, fittings
and other areas, of an oil containing system, which may be susceptible
to leakage. A highly visible stain develops on the ODP-210 coating at
points of oil leakage. ODP-210 can be easily removed by wiping with a
damp cloth.

Color Change Oil Detecting Powder
(PiNPOiNT ODP-110)
ODP-110 brushes on to joints and fittings to form a white developer type
coating. When any hydrocarbon based fluid leaks the coating changes from
white to red. It can be easily removed by wiping with a damp cloth.
